چکیده

Infrared surface temperatures from satellite sensors have been used to infer evaporation and soil moisture distribution over large areas. However, surface energy partitioning to latent versus sensible heat changes with surface vegetation cover and water availability. We tested a hypothesis that the relationship between surface temperature and canopy density is sensitive to seasonal changes in canopy resistance of conifer forests. Surface temperature ( T,) and canopy density were computed for a 20 x 25 km forested region in Montana, from the NOAA/AVHRR for 8 days during the summer of 1985. A forest ecosystem model, FOREST-BGC, simulated canopy resistance (Rf) for the same period. For all eight days, surface temperatures had high association with canopy density, measured as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (R^ = 0.73-0.91), implying that latent heat exchange is the major cause of spatial variations in surface radiant temperatures. The slope of T, and NDVI, j , was sensitive to changes in canopy resistance on two contrasting days of canopy activity. The trajectory of a followed seasonal changes in canopy resistance simulated by the model. The relationship found between <r and Rc{R^ 0.92), was nonlinear, expected because R ̂values beyond 20 s cm~‘ do not influence energy partitioning significantly. The slope of Ts and NDVI, <7, could provide a useful parameterization of surface resistance in regional evapotranspiration research.

An analysis of drought events for central plains of Iran through an employment of NOAA-AVHRR data

Drought is a major problematic phenomenon for the mostly semi-arid country of Iran. The north centralregions of Iran (north of Esfahan and Ghom province) have suffered from severe droughts several times duringthe last three decades. The frequent occurrence of drought in these regions is due to low and inconsistentprecipitation, abnormally high temperatures, increases in surface albedo and evapo...

Calibrating a Coupled SVAT–Vegetation Growth Model with Remotely Sensed Reflectance and Surface Temperature— A Case Study for the HAPEX-Sahel Grassland Sites

Models simulating the seasonal growth of vegetation have been recently coupled to soil–vegetation–atmosphere transfer schemes (SVATS). Such coupled vegetation–SVATS models (V–S) account for changes of the vegetation leaf area index (LAI) over time. One problem faced by V–S models is the high number of parameters that are required to simulate different sites or large areas. Therefore, efficient ...

Combined Spatial and Temporal Effects of Environmental Controls on Long-Term Monthly NDVI in the Southern Africa Savanna

Deconstructing the drivers of large-scale vegetation change is critical to predicting and managing projected climate and land use changes that will affect regional vegetation cover in degraded or threated ecosystems. We investigate the shared dynamics of spatially variable vegetation across three large watersheds in the southern Africa savanna. Dynamic Factor Analysis (DFA), a multivariate time...

A methodology for estimation of surface evapotranspiration over large areas using remote sensing observations

We propose a simple scheme to estimate surface evaporation over large heterogeneous areas using remote sensing observations. Our approach is based on a relationship between easily measured surface parameters (e.g. radiometric surface temperature) and a surrogate for effective surface resistance. Preliminary results, using remotely sensed data sets from AVHRR NOAA-14 over the Southern Great Plai...
